South-West Doctors Express Concern Over Unpaid Six Months' Salaries in Osun State

By AfricanOutlook Reporter

The South-West Zone of Nigerian Medical Association, (NMA), on Monday took up the Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola accusing him of turning deaf ears to workers' appeals in the non-payment of its members' salaries in the past six months.

The association expressed its grievances in a signed statement by the Coordinating Chairman for the zone, Dr Adenike Odewabi and Dr Ayoola Zaheed, (Secretary) which was made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, pointing out that it was disheartening that in spite of the fact that the Osun State Government had received its monthly allocation from Federation Account up till March this year, it had refused to settle the salaries owed her civil servants, including aged pensioners.

Leaders of Association in the Zone comprising Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun States emphasised that the non-payment of the salaries of doctors by the State Government in the past six months has resulted in "untold hardship" for the civil servants, their families and the entire citizens of the state.

The body, however called on well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in the crisis in Osun State to ensure the state government settled the salary arrears owed all the civil servants in the state, stressing that all efforts by its leadership at both the state and the Federal levels to meet Governor Aregbesola over the salaries owed doctors in the state had so far been rebuffed.

"The State of Osun has received monthly revenue from the Federation Account up till March 2015, despite the general reduction in the monthly allocation to all states of the Federation as a result of the dwindling fortune of the National Economy, but has refused to pay the salaries of her civil servants since November 2014. Not even the aged pensioners are spared. They have not received their entitlements for several months."

The association added that Doctors in the State have however continued to render selfless and sacrificial services to the hapless people of the state despite the severity of the hardship meted out to them by the state government.

"We passionately plead with the Executive Governor of the State of Osun, His Excellency Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to put a quick end to this hardship of our members by paying them their due wages. We also call on well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in this crisis in the State of Osun as human endurance is not without limit," the NMA said.
