Ogun Elders Caution Election Stakeholders on Violence

A group of Ogun State indigenes deescribing iyself as an Elders Forum on Thursday appealed to all stakeholders in the state, with emphasis on politicians ahead of Saturday Governorship and Assembly elections to maintain the peace with regards to the polls in the interest of developmental growth of the state.

Coordinator of the Forum, Aremo Taiwo Allimi said this at a press conference held at Iwe-Iroyin House.Press Centre, Abeokuta, stressing that this became necessary in the interest of developmental growth of the state.

Allimi accompanied by some other elders of the forum pointed out that every state in the country is critical to democracy and Ogun State is not exceptional.

He said, "The elders forum is keenly observing the situation in the state on the need for peace and appeals to all political parties and all candidates to sheath their swords and allow peace to reign in Ogun State," he stated.

The Coordinator said in Ogun State today, political awareness is high among the electorate ahead of the Saturday polls, and therefore appealed to all citizens in the state, politicians and youths not to take the laws into their hands, but should allow political tolerance and politics without bitterness to reign.

Allimi who explained that the forum is non-partisan and independent, said parts of its responsibility is providing guidance, insight and direction for state governance and general well-being of the people, peace and development in the state.  The body called on journalists to know that their concern are the quest for enduring unity, peace and conflict resolution, stressing that media must serve the interest of the complete society and must influence the conduct of public affairs in the state.

Similarly, the elders charged the Independent National Electoral Commission,INEC, in the state to strengthen the enduring electoral legacies being established by the National Chairman of the Commission, Attahiru Jega.

"To the Ogun State INEC and all its staff both temporary and permanent, the elders forum wishes to let them know that what is worth doing at all,is worth doing well," Allimi emphasised.
