UNILAG: Nigeria's President rescind decision on name change

By Israel Ekene Ohai

Nigeria's President, Goodluck Jonathan may have bowed to pressure when Thursday he reversed his earlier decision to rename the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to Moshood Abiola University.

The change of heart decision was made known by Professor Jerry Gana, the newly appointed chairman of the governing council of the university while speaking during his inauguration as the institution governing council’s chairman.

Prof Gana lauded the President for reversing his earlier decision saying: “This is a pointer to the fact that the current administration is committed to entrenching democracy and justice in the country.”

Gana said that President Jonathan followed the constitution by reversing the change of name of the institution.

While responding over his appointment as the chairman of the governing council of the institution and others who are also on the council that will work with him, Prof. Gana said; “I assure you that we will do our best to be fair, just and honorable in the discharge of our duties.”
