Nigerian-born professor named Vice-Chancellor of University of Guyana

Nigerian-born professor Jacob Opadeyi was yesterday selected to be the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana (UG).

The decision came when the University Council gathered to review the recommendations made by the selection committee. A member of the committee, who preferred to be unnamed, said that Opadeyi was unanimously selected on Tuesday by the interview panel but the final decision had to be made by the council.

The council last evening however approved the recommendation and it was confirmed that Opadeyi was selected to take the office of the Vice-Chancellor.

An official press conference to declare the results has been scheduled for today.

Dr. Opadeyi obtained MBA (Executive) at The University of the West Indies in 1999. He had his Ph.D in Geomatics in 1994 and M.Eng in Surveying Engineering in 1988 both at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada.

He also had his M.Sc., Surveying from University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria, 1985, and his B.Sc., Surveying (First Class Honors), at University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria, 1984.

He was the Head, Department of Surveying and Land Information during the period of 1995-1999 and a Consultant to the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Marine Resources, Trinidad & Tobago from 1995 to1999.

He is also the author of "Land and water resources management in the Caribbean" CARDI/CTA by C. L. Paul and J. Opadeyi, (eds) (2001) and has several publications in The West Indian Journal of Engineering.
