Over Five Hundred Benefit From Ogun, INDO Free Eye Surgery Drive

By AfricanOutlook Reporter

Over five hundred citizens of Ogun State have benefited from the eight day free eye surgery screening which was jointly put in place by the Ogun State Government, Indo Eye Care Foundation and the Rotary Club International in the State.

The Permanent Secretary, Hospitals Management Board, Pharmacist. Modupe Olurin who made this known at the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta during the official removal of eye dressings, said the event was a yearly collaboration between the State Government and its partners aimed at giving succour to citizens of the State who were victims of cataract and not financially buoyant to afford the cost of the operation.

Pharmacist Olurin observed that "undergoing eye surgery usually costs so much which most of our people, especially those in the rural areas and the aged, might not be able to afford. It is based on this that we have been collaborating with Foundations and Companies that have experts to carry out Free eye surgery."

She maintained that people should imbibe the habit of proper care of the eyes, good general hygiene and regular eye check-up so as to eradicate blindness in the society.

In his remarks, the team leader, Indo Eye Care Foundation, Mr. Yogesh Naik explained that since it began operations in Nigeria in year 2005, his group had carried out close to 20,000 cataract operations and plans are on-going to repeat the program in year 2016.

Mr. Naik thanked the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun for his support, describing the people of Ogun State as accommodating.

Responding, one of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Kemi Mukaila, mother of six-year-old Saheed, said her son who had been blind from birth could not access proper medical attention due to financial constraints, thanking the organisers of the program for the opportunity to undergo a successful eye surgery.
